The towering cliffs on either side, marked by ancient water channels and carvings, create a dramatic anticipation.
At the end of the Siq, the path opens suddenly to reveal the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) — Petra’s most iconic façade, exquisitely carved in the 1st century BC. After enjoying time for photos and explanations, continue through the heart of the ancient city:
Street of Facades — a row of impressive tombs carved directly into the rock walls
The Nabataean Theatre — a massive amphitheater seating up to 7,000 people, cut entirely out of the mountain

Backdoor Hike
The Back Door Hike from Little Petra to Petra offers one of the most rewarding and immersive ways to enter Petra, following ancient Nabataean routes across open desert landscapes before descending to the iconic Monastery. The walk begins at Little Petra (Siq al-Barid), where narrow sandstone passages and rock-cut facades gradually give way to a wide plateau once used by traders approaching Petra from the north. As the trail gently ascends and levels out, sweeping views unfold over rugged valleys and distant mountains, creating a strong sense of isolation and discovery far from the crowds of the main entrance.
Crossing the plateau, the terrain remains non-technical and steady, allowing for a relaxed pace and frequent photo stops while tracing the footsteps of ancient caravans. The route then descends toward the Monastery (Ad Deir), where the monumental façade appears dramatically from above—an unforgettable first encounter with one of Petra’s largest and most impressive structures. Time is usually allowed here to rest, explore the area, and enjoy panoramic viewpoints over the surrounding mountains.
From the Monastery, the trail descends via stone steps into the heart of Petra, passing tombs and scenic viewpoints along the way. With an easy-to-moderate level and a total walking time of 4–5 hours, this route offers a calm, immersive, and more authentic way to experience Petra, ideal for soft trekking itineraries.
