Bethany Beyond the Jordan – Baptism Site
Today we enter the heart of the Christian story as we travel to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the sacred place where Jesus stepped into the waters of the Jordan River and began His public ministry. In this quiet and reverent landscape, pilgrims experience a deep sense of spirituality and connection to the biblical past.

Walking along the paths once used by early believers, we pass ancient baptismal pools, the humble foundations of early churches, and the gentle banks of the Jordan River — a place that has carried prayers and devotion for centuries. Every stone and whisper of wind recalls the moment where heaven touched earth.

In this blessed setting, pilgrims gather for a special Mass celebrated in the serenity of an open-air chapel. Surrounded by Scripture, silence, and the rhythms of nature, the liturgy becomes a profound moment of reflection — a time to give thanks, seek renewal, and deepen one’s faith.

Nearby, pilgrims may also visit Elijah’s Hill, traditionally associated with the ascension of the prophet Elijah. From this vantage point, the surrounding landscape appears much as it did in the time of Jesus and John the Baptist — with tall reeds along the riverbanks and traces of the wilderness where John once lived.

Visiting this sacred area offers a moment of profound spiritual depth, connecting prophecy, baptism, and divine presence in one of Christianity’s most meaningful pilgrimage sites.

Mount Nebo
Continue to Mount Nebo, one of the most sacred sites in Jordan and a cornerstone of Christian pilgrimage. It was here that Moses stood and looked across the Promised Land, viewing the valleys and hills where salvation history would unfold.

From the summit, pilgrims can admire sweeping views across the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and, on clear days, even Jerusalem. This powerful biblical setting invites reflection on faith, promise, and the enduring guidance of God.

Inside the Memorial Church, beautifully preserved Byzantine mosaics reveal scenes of early Christian life and devotion, making this a place of silence, prayer, and deep spiritual connection.

Day 3Madaba - Mukawer - Madaba

Breakfast
Breakfast at the hotel in Madaba.

Madaba
We begin our day in the vibrant Christian town of Madaba, known for its deep-rooted faith traditions and remarkable mosaic artistry dating back to the Byzantine era. Our first stop is the Church of St. George, home to the famous 6th-century Mosaic Map of the Holy Land — the oldest surviving map depicting biblical geography.

This extraordinary mosaic once guided early Christian pilgrims on their journeys, offering a visual representation of the Holy Land from Jerusalem and Bethlehem to the Jordan River, Sinai, and beyond. Standing beside this ancient masterpiece allows pilgrims to connect with the footsteps of those who traveled centuries before them.

Continue exploring Madaba’s rich Christian heritage with a visit to the Archaeological Park, home to beautifully preserved mosaic floors from the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Hippolytus Hall. These intricate designs depict biblical scenes, symbols of creation, and geometric patterns crafted by early Christian artisans.

We then visit the Church of the Apostles, featuring the renowned mosaic of “The Lady of the Sea,” surrounded by vivid depictions of sea creatures, birds, and flora. If time permits, we also stop at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, where an underground cave and a panoramic bell tower reveal additional layers of Madaba’s spiritual history.

From the summit, sweeping desert landscapes create a powerful place for contemplation, reminding pilgrims of John’s courage, devotion, and unwavering witness to the truth. The walk up to the fortress ridge becomes a symbolic journey — a path of remembrance honoring the cost of discipleship.

Evening
