Jordan is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to do and where you plan to go. This guide explains the seasonal differences across Jordan so you can choose the right timing for your trip.
“Jordan in spring is one of the most beautiful travel experiences in the Middle East – wildflowers in the valleys, perfect temperatures, and Petra at its most photogenic.”
Spring: March to May (Best Overall)
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Jordan. Temperatures are comfortable across the country – typically 18 to 25 degrees Celsius in Amman and Petra, slightly warmer in Wadi Rum and Aqaba. The landscape is green in the north, wildflowers bloom in the highlands, and the light is exceptional for photography. Petra is at its most beautiful in spring. This is peak season – book accommodation and guides well in advance.
Autumn: September to November (Excellent)
Autumn is the second-best season, with temperatures gradually cooling after summer heat. October is particularly excellent – similar conditions to spring, with slightly fewer crowds. Wadi Rum is warm but no longer intensely hot. The Dead Sea water is at its warmest after the summer sun.
Summer: June to August (Hot but Viable)
Summer is very hot in Petra and Wadi Rum – temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Early morning visits to walking sites are essential. The Dead Sea and Aqaba are at their most popular. Amman is warm but manageable at elevation. Summer is not recommended for pilgrimage groups or those with significant walking planned.
Winter: December to February (Cool and Quiet)
Winter in Jordan is cool, occasionally wet and sometimes cold enough for snow in Amman and Petra. The upside: significantly lower prices, far fewer tourists, and extraordinary atmospheric light. Petra in winter mist is genuinely dramatic. Wadi Rum is cold at night but clear and beautiful by day. For travellers who prioritise solitude over comfort, winter is a hidden gem.
